Week 9, Term 2
Every person who has been born and that will be born is known and loved by God. In a Catholic school community, this means that we respect everybody for who they are and we celebrate everyone’s unique gifts and talents. God knows every part of us, including every strand of hair.
Welcome to the Week 9 Newsletter. Teachers have been working hard preparing student reports. These will be sent home on Thursday 6th July, on the last day of Term 2. The reports provide grades for each subject and rankings according to how students display the school’s values of Courtesy, Care, Cooperation, Communication and Consideration. The reports conclude with a written summary of each student’s achievements from the first half of the year. Teachers will be available to meet with parents to discuss their child’s school report at the beginning of Term 3.
Last Thursday, our Mid Year Reception Students began their Transition to School Visits. The second transition visit takes place this Thursday until the end of lunch. The final visit in Week 10 will be for the whole day. We look forward to seeing their smiling faces back at school this Thursday. We will also welcome Alex (Reception) and Macey Latham (Year 3) for their transition visits over the next 2 weeks. They will join St James School next term.
This Thursday, 29th June, the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) will host their next meeting in the Learning Centre at 1:30pm. All students will sing two songs to the ladies to welcome them to the school. Students have been rehearsing the songs during Music lessons and in class.
Year 3/4 Class Mass
The Year 3/4 Class Mass has been rescheduled to Wednesday 5th July (Week 10) at 9:30am in the Church. This will be a Mass of Thanksgiving, which will give us an opportunity to thank our SRC from Semester 1. All are welcome to join us in this Mass.
There will be no mass this Friday as Fr Harold will be away.
Prayer Booklets
This week, your family will receive a family prayer book distributed by CESA. We hope you find this prayer book useful at home, and may it provide moments of opportunity for your family to stop and reflect in the busyness that our life often brings.
Staff Retreat
On the last day of this term, the staff at St James will be participating in a Staff Retreat, based around our Diocesan theme, ‘Called to Community’, as well as drawing links and reflection from a CESA initiative, LearnWell. We hope the staff enjoy the opportunity to reconnect and reflect on what sets us a part as a Catholic school community.
Saint Peter and Saint Paul
This Thursday, 29th June we remember Saint Peter and Saint Paul. They shaped the Church in the early years. Peter, who was originally named Simon, was given his name by Jesus. His name means ‘rock’ or ‘stone’. In Peter, Jesus gave the Church a solid leader.
Saint Paul is one of the most important and influential of all the saints. Saint Paul was originally known as Saul, and he was a Roman citizen and a Pharisee. He was the patron saint of missionaries, evangelists, writers, journalists, authors, public workers, rope and saddle makers, and tent makers.
Loving God,
We thank you for your apostles, Peter and Paul,
And for all holy bishops and teachers who serve your church.
Guide them now and forever.
Amen
In Religion, we have been talking about our school and parish community. We brainstormed ideas of what we could do to ‘raise our hearts and minds’ to the needs of those in our community. We painted kindness rocks and hid them around town for others to find.
We also have been talking about the importance of prayer and what we can put in a prayer space. We created our own prayer spaces for puppets.
In Art, we learnt about different kinds of textures and created a collage using all kinds of fabric. Their work was awesome!
In Maths, we have been learning to copy and continue patterns. We know that patterns repeat over and over again. Here are some photos of our AB and ABC patterns.

Food Group Lunch Order
The final Year 5/6 Food Group order day is this Thursday 29th June. Orders will be available for Spaghetti Bolognaise, which will be prepared by Hazel, Alayla and Eddie. Order forms were sent home on Friday last week. Please contact the office, if your child's form has been misplaced. Orders are due back to school by tomorrow, Tuesday 27th June.
Assembly Led By Reception Class
All parents and grandparents are welcome to attend Assembly this Friday, 30th June at 2:40pm in the Learning Centre. This assembly will be led by the Reception Class.
Year 5/6 East of Ranges Choir Rehearsals
The Year 5/6 Class will continue their rehearsals with the East of the Ranges Combined Schools Choir. The next rehearsals will be this Friday 30th June. The final rehearsals will be next term on Friday 11th August. The Year 5/6 Class will perform at the Keith Michell Theatre on 13th September.
Whole School Forest Excursion
All students will attend an excursion to Bundaleer Forest in Week 10 on Wednesday 5th July after our 9:30 Mass. Being in nature offers many ways to support a child’s cognitive, physical and emotional development. In Jamestown, we are lucky to have a perfect resource for learning in nature, right on our door step. Students will be taking part in a range of art activities involving natural materials. We will be seeking parent helpers to assist with supervision to keep within the supervision ratios required to make sure all students are safe. An online parent permission form will be sent out soon.
Class News - Year 3 & 4
The Year 3 & 4 Class went to Glenhaven Park at Stockport last Thursday for an overnight camp. Take this opportunity to look through their amazing adventures! Thank you to the parent volunteers, Sophie Home and Ryan Simpson who attended the camp, their assistance was greatly appreciated. Well done to Mrs Gresch and Ms O'Reilley for organising a successful camp. Despite the wet weather on the first day of the camp, the students had a fantastic experience.

Premiers Reading Challenge
Our students are busily reading their books to complete their PRC this year. Have a discussion with your child to see what their favourite book is so far. The PRC ends 8th September. To complete the PRC, students need to read 8 books from the reading list and another 4 books of their own choice. Plus this year PRC celebrates 20 years! To mark the occasion, if your child reads 8 books from the reading list and another 12 books of their choice - making 20 books - they will receive a once off special certificate to celebrate. There are quite a few weeks left of the Challenge, which includes the holidays - so get reading!
Book Week
This year, Book Week is from Monday 21 - Friday 25 August (Week 5 - Term 3). The theme this year is "Read, Grow, Inspire." We will be looking to have our dress up parade similar to other years - on Monday after the morning assembly. The students can follow the theme or dress up as their favourite book character on that day. There will be lots of fun activities during that week for the students to participate in. The Learning Centre will be full of creative displays made by each class and fun competitions, which families are most welcome to view. More information to come as it gets closer.
SAPSASA Netball and Hockey
We wish Harriet, Lexi, Ellie, Archer, Will, Gus, Sadie, Pippa & Hugh T all the best as they compete in the SAPSASA Netball and Hockey competitions in Adelaide this week.
Gymnastics Excursion
In Week 7, all students from R-6 participated in a Gymnastics session in Port Pirie, run by the coaches at the Port Pirie Leisure Centre. The students loved being in the gymnasium with equipment that they don’t normally have access to. Thank you to Rory, Shona, Ashley, Hayley and Tash who assisted us on this excursion. Your help and supervision was greatly appreciated.

Resilience Project – Parent and Carers Hub
In the final part of The Resilience Project's digital series, Martin shares an important message about creating environments where our kids can ask for help.
65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness.
In this presentation, Martin shares a personal experience about a traumatic event that happened to him as a child. He explains how he overcame adversity and built resilience by asking for support, particularly from his family.
Note: This video contains a story of sexual abuse that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.
